The Chairman, Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), Khalid Mirza, today announced that CCP is holding an International Conference, “The Challenges in implementing competition law in developing countries” in Lahore on 11-12 May 2010. Addressing a press conference here today, the Chairman CCP informed that Pakistan is going to take the lead in organizing an international conference that carries immense significance as it will gather competition experts from several countries to discuss the implementation of competition law in the developing world. Mr. Khalid Mirza informed that the technical sessions in the two-day conference shall focus on the independence of competition agencies, determinants of an effective competition regime, and importance of competition advocacy in the developing countries. He further said that the conference will provide a platform for exchange of information on competition law implementation, opening new channels of communication between competition agencies and sharing of country experiences in various areas. Answering questions of journalists, the Chairman CCP said that implementation of the competition law is crucial for the economic development of the country. “We have a state-of-the-art competition law that needs to be continued and implemented in true spirit, as otherwise, the actions taken by CCP against cartels and other anti-business elements would go in vain.” Mr. Khalid Mirza expressed the hope that CCP would continue getting support from all quarters in true implementation of the competition law.
