Academia is an important for the Commission and its module on Economics of Competition Law, prepared with the help of King's College, London, was launched as an elective course in a major national university in early 2016. This module links economics with the application of competition law and has specific examples of the Commission's enforcement work. The Commission started taking this module to other universities under its Academia Drive for inclusion as an elective in their Management, Law and Economics curriculums.
The Drive, between November 2016 and April 2017, comprised of seminars in 24 different universities across Pakistan. In addition to introducing the 16-week module, the seminars helped in increasing student's knowledge about the competition law in Pakistan and its global applicability and importance.
The Academia Drive took place in two phases:
Phase I focused on leading universities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi and seven events took place between 21 November and 21 December 2017.
Phase 2 took the Commission to leading universities in Peshawar, Multan, Sargodha, Lahore and Karachi. 17 events took place in January-April 2017.
Several universities have expressed an interest in introducing the module as an elective subject in their curriculum. For this purpose, the Commission will be arranging a teachers' training program to help in formulating a course strategy and learning objectives of the module.
In the long term, the Commission hopes that the dividends from this partnership with universities becomes obvious in a few years as a critical mass of human resources with familiarity with competition law and compliance enters the workforce, strengthening the concept of competition and compliance in the economy.
