An interactive session was held with the recently established Women Wing of the Consumer Association of Pakistan (CAP), Karachi at the office of the Competition Commission of Pakistan on 24th February, 2023. The session was attended by Ms. Syeda Raafia Mamujee (Chairperson, CAP Women Wing), Mrs. Aiman Sami Khan (Senior Vice Chairperson), Ms. Nadia Baloch (Vice Chairperson, Women- Entrepreneurs), Ms. Roohi Akbar (Vice Chairperson – Food & Beverage Sector), Ms. Nayyar Sultana (Vice Chairperson, Handicrafts) and Ms. Lareb Sabir Siddiqui (Coordinator to Chairman). The attendees from the Commission were the Honorable Chairperson Ms. Rahat Kaunain Hassan, Ms. Kishwar Khan, Director General, Office of Fair Trade, Mr. Salman Zafar, Senior Director, Ms. Urooj Azeem Awan and Mr. Amin Akbar from the Office of Fair Trade. The Office of Fair Trade gave a detailed presentation on the concepts and working of the Commission. The presentation covered the cases dealt with by the Commission, specifically with regards to Section 10 of the Competition Act, 2010, i.e., Deceptive Marketing Practices. It was highlighted that there is a fee to file a complaint with the Commission, however, the Consumers’ Association can file a complaint without a fee. This fee waiver is provided to encourage consumer associations to come up with their concerns and support promotion of competition. The presentation was followed by a rigorous question and answer session, where various concerns were also cited by the CAP representatives, which were prevalent in the market within their respective industries. Ms. Rahat Kaunain Hassan, Chairperson, CCP appreciated the initiative of the CAP by having a women’s wing in the Association. She shared her concerns and views regarding the issues prevalent in the market. She highlighted the need for cooperation and coordination between both the organizations to achieve a common goal of consumer protection. The session concluded with a vote of thanks for the Chairperson, CCP.
