3rd International Conference “Role of Competition in Fostering Trade and Investment"


Introduction



The Competition Commission of Pakistan, in collaboration with the Delegation of the European Union to Pakistan, held the 3rd International Conference on May 29-30, 2013 at Serena Hotel and CCP Headquarters in Islamabad. The theme of the conference was "Role of Competition in Fostering Trade and Investment."

The Conference explored and discussed the importance of competition law for creating a business environment that fostered trade and investment. It provided an opportunity to share global experiences on how competition policy had been successfully integrated into trade and investment policies by other countries. Internationally acclaimed experts on competition law from the Americas, Europe, Africa, Far East, and South Asia attended the conference.

Seminar Structure and Key Participants



The Conference had the following technical sessions:

Session 1. Nexus between Competition Regime and Trade and Investment.
Session 2. Public Procurement: Creating a Level-playing Field.
Session 3. Detecting Cartels: Investigative Techniques, Leniency and Reward Programs
Session 4. Promoting Competition through Advocacy.

Objectives



To share country experiences and best practices in addressing common challenges in the implementation of competition law in young competition regimes

To promote networking among participating competition experts on competition laws and policy.

To analyze success stories and failures and discuss barriers in the way of more effective involvement between competition agencies and consumer protection organizations.

Outputs



Creating awareness of competition principles among stakeholders.

Sharing country experiences to enhance the capacity of agencies in enforcing competition laws.

Fostering closer cooperation among participating agencies.
